Rustenburg Herald - Kroondal - Strange things have happened in and around Rustenburg in the past! Roughly two years ago a fully grown crocodile was seen crossing the N4 in the vicinity of Kroondal, earlier Rustenburg motorists almost drove into the veld when a local farmer had a young kudu bull accompanying his cattle in the field and leading them with the familiar "cow bell" around its neck. On Monday morning (4 March) motorists on the Bakwena N4 only a few meters from the Kroondal offramp almost overturned their cars when a fully grown hippopotamus was noticed as it appeared to wait on passing traffic before it attempted to cross the N4.
The Bakwena N4 concessionaires were immediately notified who in turn dispatched field officers and management of the Rustenburg SPCA as well as North West Nature Conservation to search for the animal in an effort to apprehend the hippo before anyone was seriously injured. In addition to the threat of vehicles crashing into the hippo on the N4, it is a known fact that hippos are responsible for the most killings of human beings in Africa. Anxious to see the hippo story developing further, the story seems to have gone cold soon after once the animal found its way into a dam in the Kroondal environment. The possibility that the animal could and have walked off into the night to another area, couldn't be ruled out Rustenburg Herald has learned. (Foto: Marisa Kruger Rustenburg SPCA)
