MAHIKENG MAIL – MAHIKENG - Women across the board were celebrated during the North West government’s commemoration of Women’s Month at the Atamelang Sports Ground in Tswaing Local Municipality under the theme ‘Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy towards Women’s Development’.

Women were afforded the opportunity to not only pay tribute to the heroic women who led the 1956 march, but also to highlight the role women play in different fields, including public sector management, construction, agriculture, tourism, waste management and technology, in order to narrow gender disparities. Addressing the community members who were mostly women, Acting Premier Gaoage Oageng Molapisi said that the province recognised the selfless and heroic contributions made by women towards achieving democracy and freedom in South Africa.  He further said that this year’s celebration coincided with 30 years of democracy. “That demonstrates an appreciation of the hard-won freedoms of the women of the country and the province.” Acting Premier Molapisi highlighted that 2024 marked 70 years since the adoption of the Women’s Charter by the Federation of South African Women.  Residents of Tswaing were provided with access to provincial departments and state-owned entities, that provided on-site services that included exhibition of library services with special services for the blind and the visually impaired, a membership drive, exhibitions of crafts /artwork, mural pain-tings and women writers will receive copies of their published books and donation of sporting equipment and attire to local women’s clubs and hubs.
