MAHIKENG MAIL-MAHIKENG: Recently, almost 50 community members were given books during a book review discussion session, with the intention to see how the book related to the lives of the people and its capabilities to make reading more valuable. This was at ZM Seatlholo Secondary School in Lotlhakane Village near Mahikeng.
The book review invited a panel of four facilitators including; Professor Gilbert Motsaathebe, an award winning author NRF rated academic global speaker, Tebogo Edwin Lesoro, Social entrepreneur educator, Kerotse Keaikitse, social worker and Tshidi Bokgwathile.
The discussion was centered around how the book relates to the lives of people and what lessons they have drawn from the book.
The book review session was also intended to spark an interest in the communities to read and encourage them to have their own book review discussion within their community.
On November 16 2023, MEC Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi launched a book club at ZM Seatlholo Secondary school. The launch was a collaboration between the North West Department of Education and the National Education Collaboration Trust.
During the launch, members of the community were given a book titled “Trapped” written by a Lotlhakane born woman called Malebo Old John-Tsindi. The reading process was meant to extend the reading initiative across individuals from all walks of lives across all ages and to ensure that reading became an apex priority amongst the community, especially in Lotlhakane Village near Mahikeng
The MEC for Education Viola Motsumi had a strong view that a community that does not read cannot lead. That idea connects well with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s initiative to get more South Africans reading, that had gained momentum throughout the country.
Bailey Nkuna, the manager from NECT, said his company will continue to support the North West Province in the book review program and praised the MEC for Education Viola Motsumi for continuing to spearhead the book review program in the province.
