MAHIKENG MAIL- RIETFONTEIN: The official opening of KMF Agro-Progressing plant of Dr Obakeng Mfikwe just outside Lichtenburg on Tuesday this week displayed love, passion and utmost commitment on farming.
Dr Mfikwe joined by Minister Thoko Didiza of the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development accompanied by the Acting Premier of the North-West Nono Maloi, and MEC Desbo Mohono of the North-West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development shared a moment to celebrate a milestone journey OF Dr Mfikwe to achieve his goal to own a fully operational Agro progressing plant.
This modernized facility specialize in livestock farmer that can process up to 100 animals a day having created over 50 jobs for the local community members.
Although the North-West Province is known for cattle production, most of these cattle are not slaughtered in the province depriving the local economy of much-needed capital due to products being sold before value-adding which it was different at KMF plant where it produced a full finished products. Dr Mfikwe said over the past 15 years we have put together a foundation to get us where we are today. The seed to plant red meat abattoir was planted in 2016 when we tried to buy Bloehof abattoir. Myself and Linda. The transaction fell through and since we had to deliberate about making sure we embark on this journey. So approached the IDC in 2019 after doing much work, design work getting designs approved and to get this project funded. We hit by Covid-19 and the world changed. We experienced further delays realising the dream. We got approval in November from the IDC to fund this project. Still lots of challenges at the time which took a long time for us to get the money flowing. From the bottom of my heart I nwould like to thank this people, first of all my wife because she had to listen to all this madness, this ideas that kept me up late at night. Thank Linda, IDC who were part of this dream from the beginning, MEC Desbo Mohono who we ran to when we fell short and the Minister Thoko Didiza who called and shouted at me and made me realize that this development is far bigger than us”.
