MAHIKENG MAIL - MAHIKENG: The North West province has proudly maintained its fourth position with the matric Class of 2025 achieving an impressive 88.49% pass rate. This remarkable milestone represents a 0.9% increase from the previous year which reflected the dedication and hard work of the Class of 2025.
MEC Viola Motsumi celebrated this milestone, highlighting the province’s progress over the past six years: 2019: 86.8% (position 4), 2020: 76.0% (position 3), 2021: 78.6% (position 4), 2022: 79.8% (position 5), 2023: 81.63% (position 4), 2024: 87.52% (position 4) and in 2025 taking position four again. Key performance highlights for 2025 - Bachelor admissions slightly decreased to 18 166 (44.4%), Diploma admissions improved to 12 142 (29.78%), Higher Certificate admissions rose to 5 896 (17.42%), males outperformed females with 89.11% vs 88.00% and 8 050 subject distinctions were achieved (excluding Life Orientation). MEC Motsumi acknowledged the progress but emphasised that there’s more work to be done.
The department focused on reducing underperforming schools through targeted interventions: numbers declined from 106 underperforming schools in 2022, to 73 schools in 2023, to only 28 schools in 2024 and in 2025 the number of schools whose overall pass rate is below 70% are 37 - which is an increase of eight schools. “We are determined to eradicate this sector of schools to ensure 90-100% of our schools are fully functional,” Motsumi stated.
