MAHIKENG MAIL - DISANENG: The North West Women in Tourism organisation proudly hosted their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the breath-taking Disaneng Dam on 28 August 28 under the theme ‘Empowering Rural Economies Through Sustainable Tourism’.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including tribal council leaders, municipal officials and women in tourism-related businesses.
The AGM served as a platform to highlight Disaneng’s untapped tourism potential and aimed to align efforts to promote domestic and inclusive tourism.
The event also focused on empowering women and youth by providing a unique opportunity for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The gathering was honoured by the presence of Kgosi Mogakolodi Masibi of the Batlharo boo Tokwana. Kgosi Masibi’s attendance underscored the critical role of traditional leadership in supporting community-based tourism development.
In his keynote address, he emphasised the need for collaboration between local authorities, tourism bodies and traditional councils to foster sustainable economic opportunities in rural areas.
Chairperson of North West Women in Tourism, Gibby Memane, stated, “Our aim is to bring tourism closer to the people. By hosting our AGM in a rural setting such as Disaneng, we are intentionally shifting the spotlight to hidden gems and encouraging investment in areas that have long been overlooked. Women in these communities have powerful stories, cultural wealth, and entrepreneurial potential that can drive tourism in authentic and sustainable ways.”
The event marked a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism in rural areas. By empowering women and youth, North West Women in Tourism aims to unlock the economic potential of these communities and create opportunities for growth and development.
The organisation’s efforts are a testament to the power of collaboration and community driven initiatives in driving positive change.
