MAHIKENG MAIL - MAHIKENG: The battle lines have been drawn between “David and Goliath” for the upcoming 10th Provincial Congress of the ANCYL North West, set for this weekend from 26-28 April at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.
The long awaited congress for the provincial youth league received the go-ahead, while other provinces were to be sent for political education before going to any conference - as announced recently by the ANC NEC Secretary, Fikile Mbalula, who spoke about the “battle between David and Goliath” - a standoff between Tshepo Mohlomi who hails from the humble dusty streets of Lomanyaneng, coming up against Wessels Morweng, the MEC for Community Safety and Transport, for the position of Provincial Chairperson of the league.

Morweng is seen as the “Goliath”, having the advantage of having served in the elite structures of the league since 2014, when he was elected Regional Secretary in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district. As MEC, he has the political leverage to be elected by dispensing patronage by promising delegates businesses and jobs in his department.
Mohlomi, current Spokesperson of the Youth league in the province, will have a mountain to climb to defeat Morweng to win the provincial chairperson’s seat.
He has been described as “David” - driven by ambition and fate. He will be hoping that the gods are with him to win against a figure endorsed by his position and the proximity he has to power.
The 10th Provincial Congress will be a watershed moment for the youth of the province. It must present solutions for them in the face of rising unemployment and bondage. Whatever happens, the theatrics will be reminiscent of the David versus Goliath story told in the Bible.
The youth in the province have eagerly awaited to cease this moment at the upcoming congress of electing the best and favourite candidate to lead the youth league structure as the provincial Chairperson.
Furthermore, pressing issues affecting the youth remain the core mandate of this congress, to elect leadership that is ready to address youth challenges including unemployment, job opportunities and youth participation in key positions of governance.
