STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The World Teachers’ Day that was recognized on Saturday, 5 October, was celebrated by teachers of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district on Friday, 11 October at Gert Lubbe Sport stadium in Vryburg.

According to an official letter of the Department of Education of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district, the department requested to use the soccer and netball sporting facilities on the sports ground for around 1500 teachers that were expected for the celebrations and that they booked from 07:00 to 17:00 on the day. According to visuals and reports from community members in the vicinity of the sportsgrounds, the celebrations, by way more than 1 500 teachers, continued until around 20:00 the night, with the premises that was left in a state of a pig sty. Broken glass bottles, boxes, papers and more were left all over the cricket pitch, grass hockey field and the larger sports ground. Spots of braai or fire debris that were made on the ground at the tennis courts were not clear-up. The concern of parents and the larger community are, that teacher’s do earn respect as part of the natural order of things, but when teachers celebrate and leave places as they did at Gert Lubbe, a school sport stadium, it is difficult for parents, the community or any child to have respect for a teacher that is supposed to be an example in the community. An official enquiry about the celebrations was made to the department of education, but by the time of printing of the newspaper, no feedback or even a response was received from the department.
