STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela conducted in the North West Province as part of keeping the province safe and secure, resulted in the arrest of 1 201 suspects for numerous crimes between Monday, 08 and Sunday, 14 January 2024.

162 suspects were arrested for drug related offences, 19 for illegal dealing in liquor, 25 for driving under the influence of liquor, four for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, while 66 suspected undocumented persons were handed over to the Immigration officials for further processing. A further 269 arrests were made for serious and violent crimes that included six for murder, 186 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 67 for Assault Common, and 10 for rape. 313 suspects were arrested during detective suspect raiding operations. The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lt Gen Sello Kwena, commended the police and all other role players for their continued collaborative efforts to ensure the safety of all people in the country and the province in particular.
