STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The Bethanie-Modikwe Bulk Water Supply project is situated +-40 km North-East of the town of Rustenburg.

Magalies is the Water Service Provider (WSP) for the Bethanie-Modikwe Bulk Water Supply project and Implementing Agent. Upon completion Magalies Water will be the owner of the new infrastructure. This project worth R 66 682 953.59, targeting about 6000 households and is co-funded by Rhovan PSV (Glencore) for Civil Engineering Services while the construction phase is Magalies Water funded. Affected areas are currently being supplied with potable water from the Kort Begrip Reservoir. The pipeline currently supplies the communities of Modikwe, Barseba and Bethanie. Rustenburg Local Municipality and Magalies Water identified the need for upgrading of the existing bulk water supply line from the Kort-Begrip Reservoir to the affected communities. The current water demand considerably exceeds the capacity of the existing bulk supply. The current population within the project footprint is 22 201. The project is due for completion by September 2024. The pipeline currently supplies the communities with an average of 14 ML/day to satisfy demand between the three villages (Bethanie, Modikwe and Berseba). The demand in the three villages is around 24 ML/d. Surface water is currently augmented by supply from boreholes. The scope of works will consist of the design and construction of a new bulk gravity main supplying the local storage reservoirs located at Modikwe and Bethanie from the Kort-Begrip Reservoir. The new gravity mains will be constructed up to the points of sale supplying the local storage reservoirs at Modikwe and Bethanie. Makolokwe is currently not connected onto the existing bulk supply network. The current scope of works excludes the construction of a bulk supply line from Bethanie to Makolokwe. Allowance have been made for enough bulk water supply up to Bethanie should the integration of Makolokwe be required in the near future. The table below provides the current and future estimated daily water demand, against the population figures currently and in the future in Berseba, Bethanie and Makolokwe.
