STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Fifty-nine of the top Mathematical Literacy Grade 12 learners from the Naledi Local Education Office (LEO) were invited by the Senior Education Specialist, Mr. Christo van Rensburg, to participate in a competition in the form of a test, to motivate and reward them for being such hard working learners.  The competition was held over three days (30 & 31 July and 1 August 2024).

Twenty-one schools were represented form all over the Naledi LEO, which comprises of the Naledi, Mamusa and Lekwe-Teemane circuit.  Learners’ knowledge was tested on Finance, Measurement, Maps & Plans, Data handling and Probability. 
The learners and teachers who attended the competition each received the SHARP EL-W535SA calculator and had a presentation by Ms. Talitha Moore from SHARP on some of the relevant functions of the calculator which they can use in Mathematical Literacy.  After the presentation the learners wrote a test to test their knowledge on Mathematical Literacy content. 
The attendees were treated with snacks from Rejabotlhe Guesthouse and lunch from Debonairs in Vryburg and Schweizer-Reneke and Spar in Bloemhof.  All the competitors received prizes from NWU, SHARP, Agrimark Vryburg, Office National Vryburg and Enslins Vryburg. 
The overall winner of the competition was Otlotleng Mogokonyane from Vryburg High School.  Nicole Oosthuizen representing Bloemhof Combined School was second and Jané Viljoen also from Vryburg High School was third.
“The competition nearly doubled in numbers from last year’s 30 to this year’s 59 learners. Learners did very well in the test. They enjoyed the competition and learned a lot about the new SHARP calculator “, van Rensburg said.
