Lentswe, Jouberton - Representatives of the Matlosana municipality were on the ground this week to assess human settlement projects. The City of Matlosana, under the leadership of the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Planning and Human Settlements, Cllr Portia Mtshawulana, conducted a thorough inspection on Monday March 10. The purpose of this inspection was to assess the progress of key human settlement projects and address concerns raised by residents across various communities. MMC Mtshawulana visi-ted several areas, including Jouberton Ext 31, Kanana Ext 17, the Orkney Ext 2 Infrastructure Project, and informal settlements such as Stokamina, Tony Shaft, and Zandpan (Mama Winnie).
Key observations and Fin-dings:
- Jouberton Ext 31 and Kanana Ext 17: Several stands were found to be uninhabitable due to waterlogging and their proximity to wetland areas. The City has decided to relocate all affected households.
- Orkney Ext 2 Infrastructure Project: This project is 99% complete. The City is prioritizing the finalization of stand allocation for eligible beneficiaries and will conduct a comprehensive valuation of the serviced land. An Allocation Committee, chaired by the MMC, will oversee this process.
- Tony Shaft Informal Settlement: The area on Erf 6262, Stilfontein Ext 9, has been deemed suitable for habitation; however, households located within the electricity servitude on the adjacent farm portion will be relocated to Khuma Ext 12.
- Stokamina and Zandpan (Mama Winnie): Both settlements, located on private land, were found to have severely poor living conditions. The City is committed to relocating these households to Khuma Ext 12.
Planned Interventions:
- The relocation of all affected households in Jouberton Ext 31, Kanana Ext 17, Tony Shaft, Stokamina, and Zandpan (Mama Winnie) to Khuma Ext 12.
- Accelerating development at Khuma Ext 12, with all relocations targeted for completion by June 30.
- Establishing the Allocation Committee to fast-track stand distribution and ensure transparency in the selection of beneficiaries.
“The City of Matlosana remains dedicated to improving the living conditions of its residents and ensuring that all housing developments are safe, dignified, and sustainable,” said Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson.
