Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana has raised concern regarding ongoing sewer failures across the municipality, stating the continuous problems are creating serious health and safety risks for residents. The party has announced it will formally escalate the matter to the Municipal Manager to ensure accountability. According to a statement released by the DA, persistent sewer blockages have been exacerbated by recent heavy rains, leading to overflowing waste in residential neighbourhoods. The party characterizes the situation as a growing public health hazard, asserting that it can no longer be ignored.

Cllr Lourens Cromhout alleges that reports of sewer blockages from concerned residents have been met with unresponsiveness from the Matlosana sewer department for months. “Claims include unanswered telephone lines and response times that are frequently too slow to prevent damage.’’

He says the crisis is worsened by a critical lack of resources, specifically citing an insufficient number of municipal vehicles available to attend to emergencies quickly and effectively.

The DA is calling on the municipality to prioritize the health and safety of its residents by ensuring adequate staff, equipment, and proactive maintenance to prevent recurring sewer spills.
