Lentswe, Wolmaransstad - The local magistrates’ court sentenced Dodo Oliphant (32) to 10 year’s imprisonment last week for the murder of his girlfriend.
His was sentenced on August 16. Oliphant was arrested in November 2019 after the assault on Karabo Metswamere.

He was initially charged with attempted murder but it changed to murder when she died in hospital. The court heard that Oliphant reacted in anger after he visited and found his girlfriend with another man at her residence in Tswelelang. He then stabbed the man who ran away. Turning his anger towards Metswamere, he assaulted and stabbed her. The neighbours who witnessed the incident, called her family, who alerted the police who found the injured woman. She was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

According to Lt-Col Amanda Funani, police spokesperson, Oliphant has been behind bars ever since his arrest and was also charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH). Upon sentencing the accused, the court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded Wolmaransstad Detectives for the sterling job and dedication they displayed to ensure that Oliphant was arrested and convicted. He said he is pleased that the sentence, which was imposed during Women’s Month, will serve as an indication to criminals that Gender Based Violence (GBV) will not be condoned.
