Photo for illustration purpose onlyLentswe, Kanana - Calm has returned to Kanana after all hell broke loose with several shots and explosions earlier this week. These incidents occurred after 23:00 on Monday June 17. A resident contacted the newspaper and said he is hearing various shots and explosions. He sounded petrified and said it is terrible, he is fearing for his life.
Provincial police confirmed the situation and said that an unknown group of people set cars alight and fired shots at passing cars.

According to Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, the motives for this anarchy are not known. Residents who want to remain anonymous as they are afraid of victimisation, are speculating that it was either zama-zamas fighting or taxi owners clashing.

“A case of arson and malicious damage to property was opened at Kanana Police Station after three cars were set alight. The same people also fired several shots towards the house leading to damages. The house was also partially burnt,” he said.

Mokgwabone confirmed that the same group also fired shots towards a passing vehicle, hitting and killing a female passenger. A case of murder was registered. The victim’s identity is unknown.

The group also fired at another passing vehicle, injuring another female passenger. A case of attempted murder was registered.
No one has been arrested and investigations are underway.
