Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Strange to think that something as simple as a white cane, can bring freedom to a disabled person. In a move to observe Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM), the Office of the Executive Mayor has responded to the long-standing plea of a Khuma resident, providing a critical tool for his independence. Hendrick Molato, a 43-year-old resident of Ward 34 in Khuma, has been totally blind for over 10 years. His call for assistance was answered by the Office of the Executive Mayor, through the initiative of the Disability Desk led by Ditto Maine.

They organised a white cane for him to significantly enhance his freedom of mobility.

This white cane is considered a “game-changer” in the life of the young man. It will not only help him navigate safely by detecting obstacles and landmarks, but also serves as an internationally recognised symbol to alert others of his condition as a visually impaired person.

Acknowledging the high level of poverty that afflicts many people with disabilities in the region, the Office of the Executive Mayor also donated essential groceries to assist Molato and his family.
