Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Matlosana Municipality’s debt to Midvaal Water Co, the only supplier of potable water to residents of the Kosh Area, is far exceeding R1 billion.
Presently Midvaal Water Co is asking the North West High Court to grant an order to limit the bulk water supply to the city. That will mean that households will only get six kilolitres per month at a minimum flow of 10 litres per minute.

Local attorney and chairperson of the Matlosana Business Chamber, Johan Oosthuizen said that Nova Matlosana in Action, a community action group, applied to be an intervening party in the matter between Midvaal Water Co and the City of Matlosana.

Nova is a non-profit community oriented organisation that represents a variety of stakeholders in the community. It was established in 2022.

“Nova was made aware of the main application during 2023 after the application was served on the Matlosana Business Chamber and appointed Theron, Jordaan & Smit Attorneys to obtain insight into the proceedings,’’ said Oosthuizen.

Last year, Midvaal Water issued the main application against the City of Municipality for judgment in the amounts of R945 284 069.44, R205 899 274.30 and R92 408 181.53 together with interest.

On Friday June 28, the High Court allowed Nova as a friend of the Court to participate in the legal action. “It is our aim to advocate for the community’s right to a sufficient water supply and to ensure that the interests of our residents and businesses are adequately represented and protected. This application is crucial as it addresses the significant issue of the possible reduction in water supply by Midvaal Water to our city due to none-payment by the City of Matlosana for services rendered.’’

On behalf of Nova, a non-profitable entity, Oosthuizen asked for contribution to the legal cost for this intervention and procedures to follow. “It will consume time and efforts from various experts and the legal team.

“Any financial contribution will be appreciated.’’
