MAHIKENG MAIL – MAHIKENG - The newly appointed Agriculture MEC, Mokone Collen Maine, led the handing over event of Mmatau Library to Moses Kotane Local Municipality and the community on Monday.
Based on the principles of the Batho Pele programme, which is to provide a framework for making decisions about delivering public services to the people of South Africa who do not have access to them, the event was aligned to provide for needy communities. Batho Pele also aims to rectify the inequalities in the distribution of existing services.
It is against this background that the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR) is tasked amongst other things, with the responsibility of building libraries for communities within the province, seeking to redress past imbalances to the previously disadvantaged by ensuring access to information which will assist to uplift the community’s livelihood.
During the 2023/24 financial year, the department completed six libraries and handed over five, which included Migdol, Redirile, Logagane, Rekgarathlile and Uitkyk libraries. The Mmatau modular structure is fully equipped with furniture, books, computers, a toy library section and internet. The event also sought to showcase the contribution of the department in increasing access to information through libraries.
The day commenced with mass aerobics and an anti-gender based violence (GBV) walk before proceeding to the opening of the library.
