RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - This is an alert to all the residents of Rustenburg, regarding a scam targeting ratepayers. Individuals are contacting residents and demanding money to prevent ‘scheduled disconnections’ due to municipal accounts in arrears, further cutting off their electricity supply.
The individual masquerades as an employee of Rustenburg Local Municipality, claiming to be from the electrical unit.

The scammers typically sends WhatsApp messages that the electricity will be cut at certain areas/properties, because of accounts that are allegedly in arrears and that “officials” will be on site and a certain address where victims are invited to come and meet the scammers in an effort to “negotiate” for a reprieve. Therefore, our valued customers and businesses must be aware that this is a SCAM, and the Municipality condemns such illegal activities.  Furthermore, the Municipality is actively investigating the origins of this scam and urges anyone with information and encountering any irregularities around electrical connections or water meters, to kindly report the incident to the Municipality’s call centre on 014 590 3111 or walk into the Municipality offices promptly. In addition, ensure that you open a case at your nearest South African Police Services branch. We, as Rustenburg Local Municipality, are working very hard to circumvent these fraudulent activities and we plead with you, for your assistance to curb this crisis.
