Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Heritage day was celebrated in Klerksdorp at Goudkoppie He-ritage Hill where Matlosana Executive Mayor, Fikile Mahlophe, said residents must explore heritage sites in our area.
He was joined by Rathebe Mojaki, founder of the Leano La Bophelo project who revamped Goudkoppie to its former glory as a facility embracing the heritage and history of Klerksdorp alongside Klerksdorp Museum. Goudkoppie will also be known as an information hub for tourists to the area. Mayor Mahlophe was accompanied by Speaker Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya and MMCs.
Mojaki said the information center is a one stop shop to provide guidance and navigation to Matlosana and Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s historical heritage sites and a tourist destination to attract visitors. “It will also be a link between local arts and craft practitioners and potential partners so as to enhance their businesses.’’
It was an exciting event with people of different cultures enjoying indigenous games, sharing stories on the history of Matlosana and its people.
A day before the event, Leano la Bophelo joined community members at the old Jouberton cemetery for a clean-up of the graves. “This initiative is a reminder that graves are sacred heritage sites that should be preserved and maintained. Those who have passed on are our ancestors and they need to be honored for the contribution they have done to our lives and communities.’’
This year’s theme for Heritage month was “Celebrating the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for our freedom”.
MMC Sports, Arts, and Culture, Cllr Mojalefa Mosupa warmly introduced the Executive Mayor in a cultural manner, highlighting him as a man with a vision who respects and honours his culture.
Following the Executive Mayor’s speech, traditional healers and everyone in attendance, led by Dr Manzini Moleme, district chairperson, gathered at Heritage Hill to perform their traditional rituals.
The day was celebrated with delegates and the public dressed in traditional outfits showcasing their indigenous games, music, dance, cuisine, and crafts. In the end, people enjoyed a traditional meal prepared in a cultural setting.
