Lentswe, Klerksdorp – The Klerksdorp Safety and Security forum once again warned residents to be more vigilant of crime after an elderly woman fell victim to robbers who pretended to be municipal officials. According to a statement published on Facebook, the incident happened on Monday December 9. Apparently the lady allowed the men into her home when they said they are working for the municipality and needed to check the prepaid electricity meter. They then proceeded in robbing her. The police’s Col Adele Myburgh could not confirm the incident but said it is wise to never allow people in your home.
The forum warned residents to not just allow anyone in your home. Any person wishing to enter your premises must produce a form of identification. “A reflective vest is not a sign of an employee of a company, anyone can purchase a reflective jacket.’’ It is also wise to confirm details with the employer and tell a friend or family member about the visit if you are alone.
Allowing strangers in your home can put you in a vulnerable situation. Follow these safety tips:
- Don’t open the door if you don’t recognize the person at the door.
- Be prepared in case things go wrong.
- Use a remote panic button.
- Talk through a window.
- Trust your instincts.
- Use the buddy system and avoid walking alone anywhere.
