Lentswe, Klerksdorp – Four men were killed in two separate shootings within two days of each other. At this stage, the shootings don’t seem to be connected. The latest incident happened in Orkney on Saturday night March 2 at 23:00 when two men died in a hail of bullets while driving in Shalot Maxeke Avenue.
The driver of the BMW died on the scene while his passenger was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Four people sitting in the back of the vehicle escaped without injury.
According to Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, the gunman was a pedestrian.
“Witnesses said he opened fire on the vehicle while it was driving by. The gunman was in the company of another man and both of them disappeared in the commotion. After the shooting the BMW crashed into a nearby fence where it came to a stop,’’ she said.
The deceased were not identified. No arrests have been made and the police are requesting anyone with information, to contact Sgt Dibuseng Molusi on 073 542 3905.
This recent shooting is close on the heels of another mass shooting in Pienaarsdorp early on Friday morning March 1.
Police were called to a scene where three gunmen opened fire on a group of men outside a local business. Two men were dead and three more were injured.
Col Myburgh said apparently four of the victims applied for jobs at the business. A fifth victim who was injured was an innocent bystander and not part of the group. “The men were leaving the business where they applied for jobs when the gunmen opened fire.”
The motive for the attack is still unknown. The deceased are between 33 and 26 years old and both South African citizens.
The investigation continues.
