Lentswe, Klerksdorp - It’s been a wet New Year thus far.
This week’s heavy downpours in the Kosh Area have flooded roads and opened up potholes making driving in these circumstances very difficult. On Wednesday January 10, the Leemhuis Street extension at Ysterspruit was flooded due to heavy downpours from the previous day.

In Wilkoppies, Oupa Coetzee measured more than 60mm from 05:00 on Tuesday January 9 until after 09:00 on Wednesday January 10. His rain-gauge measured about 70mm since New Year’s day before this week’s downpour began.

The SA Weather Service warned of severe thunderstorms over the southern parts of North West. These storms are expected to produce heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning that may result in flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas resulting in closure of some bridges and roads, danger to life (fast flowing streams/deep water) danger to informal/ formal houses or structures over populated areas (urban or rural villages), and structural damages (homes, car port, etc).

On Friday January 5 heavy winds accompanied by hail caused some damage to property in Klerksdorp. Households in Jouberton, Freemanville, Meiringspark, Songloed, Declerqville, Elandsheuwel, Irenepark and Wilkoppies were left without power for hours after the severe storm.
The Civic Centre in Stilfontein experienced some serious damages caused by a storm on December 26. The roofing at the west wing of the building was mostly affected. Three families were relocated to alternative accommodation.

The owner of the building has appointed a service provider to repair the damages caused by the rainstorm.
