Lentswe, Klerksdorp - In preparation of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit on Friday October 20, Minister Sihle Zikalala for Public Works and Infrastructure visited the Klerksdorp Correctional Centre earlier this week to inspect the renovation of the facility. The facility is currently undergoing renovations to the tune of R94.4 million.It is an extensive initiative aimed at upgrading facilities and enhancing living conditions for inmates.
The project, which is expected to be completed by 2025, includes improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities, modernizing the sewer system, replacing damaged baths and cisterns, and making electrical and civil engineering advancements. The renovation also involves replacing the prison’s roof and ceiling to enhance the safety and structural integrity of the building.
During his visit to the construction site on Tuesday October 17, Minister Zikalala highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring successful and efficient execution of all projects under the Siyahlola program. He was impressed with the Klerksdorp Prison renovation project and said it is an inspiring example of how public works projects can generate lasting, positive change within a community.
“The district and the deputy Minister will frequent this project on quarterly basis to ensure that construction is monitored,” he said.
When asked about appointment of SMMEs at the project he said: “Four sub-contractors benefited, 26 inmates have been trained and given skills, 40 job opportunities were created and that include absorbing people who come with local contractors to work.”
Dr Kenneth Kaunda district Mayor Nikiwe Num said they are happy about the report given to them by the department and also from the contractors.
