Lentswe, Orkney - Motorists are stopped at roadblocks almost daily these days and the traffic department in particular is busy collecting outstanding warrants. According to the provincial police commissioner, roadblocks are also a good way to prevent crime and will become a more common sight on our roads.
On Friday 14 June, at the start of the long weekend, the police, together with traffic officers, manned a roadblock at the Orkney/Leeudoringstad junction which stopped traffic for a while.
Orkney police arrested a forty-year-old man here after he was caught in possession of stolen copper cable.
According to Lt Col Amanda Funani, police spokesperson, the copper cable was found in the car’s trunk. “The man was on his way from Leeudoringstad to Orkney when his car at the roadblock was flagged for search. The buyer was found in the trunk and he could not give a valid explanation for its possession.’’
He appeared in Orkney Magistrates’ Court this week on charges of possessing suspected stolen property and damaging essential infrastructure.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, praised the members for their alertness which led to the arrest. He further said that law enforcement agencies will continue to carry out various actions to combat crime.
