Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Sassa confirmed in a media statement this week that no social grants have been suspended. However, the agency is currently undertaking a review process to verify the eligibility of beneficiaries suspected of having an additional undisclosed income.

The statement said that some payments may be temporarily delayed while a beneficiary’s review is being completed. This process is not intended to punish any beneficiary, but to ensure the continued proper use of public funds.

Themba Matlou, SASSA CEO, emphasized that the review is in the public interest to ensure grants are paid only to eligible individuals. “The legislative framework requires applicants to fully declare all sources of income. Failure to comply is a violation of the law.”

The review process helps SASSA identify beneficiaries who may no longer qualify due to changes in financial, medical, or legal status, or those who have relocated or passed away.

Beneficiaries contacted for review are requested to visit their nearest SASSA office with the following documents:
- A valid South African ID (13-digit barcoded ID or smart ID card).
- Proof of income (e.g., payslips, pension slips, or affidavits if unemployed).
- Bank statements for the last three months.
- Proof of residence (e.g., utility bill).
- Medical report (for disability or care dependency grants).
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree, if applicable.
- Death certificate, if applicable.
- Relevant documents such as birth certificates for Child Support Grants.

To qualify for a Child Support Grant, an individual’s annual income must fall within certain thresholds.

According to the latest thresholds effective from 1 April 2025:
- A single person must earn no more than R67 200 per year.
- A married couple’s combined income must not exceed R134 400 per year.

- Beneficiaries are urged to respond promptly to any official communication from Sassa to avoid delays or suspension of their grants. For more information, the public can call Sassa’s toll-free number at 0800 60 10 11.
