Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Residents who are suffering due to a lack of service delivery would be shocked to know that other cities and towns have it a lot worse.
Good Governance Africa (GGA) has published its 2024 Governance Performance Index (GPI) to provide a portrait of the state of local governance in South Africa.

The country’s eight metropolitan municipalities were evaluated with an additional category of Economic Development. Cape Town rules the list with Mangaung in eighth place.

Provincially, NW is in last place of the provinces with a score of 2.59 out of 5.
The province scored the lowest in every category: service delivery, admin and governance, planning, monitoring and evaluation and leadership and management. The North West has a 19% satisfaction rate.

The country has 205 local municipalities, with Matlosana among the 19 secondary cities. Drakenstein in the Western Cape leads this group. Matlosana is ranked in 129th place out of the 205.

Tlokwe, Matlosana and Rustenburg are in 12th, 13th and 14th places respectively in this group of secondary cities. Madibeng is in last place.

In the small town category and mostly rural town categories the NW scored very badly. Maquassi Hills is in 97th place out of 99 in the category for small towns.

The country has 61 mostly rural municipalities, with Kagisano-Molopo, Moretele and Ratlou - all in the NW - among the worst, just ahead of Joe Morolong in the Northern Cape.
