Lentswe, Orkney - The police suspect the driver of the Toyota Hilux that ploughed into a group of pedestrians on the Klerksdorp/Orkney road killing three, and injuring a fourth, fell asleep behind the wheel.
The fifty year old man and three passengers were travelling from the Eastern Cape on their way to Boitekong in Rustenburg when disaster struck shortly before 07:00 on Tuesday October 29. They were not injured.

According to WO Elize van Schalkwyk, police spokesperson, driver fatigue cannot be ruled out. She said that the driver was not arrested. “Procedure was followed and detectives must now investigate the cause of the accident. As soon as the investigation is completed, the docket will be send to court for the prosecutor to decide on prosecution,’’ she said. A case of culpable homicide is investigated.

Two pedestrians, and another man cycling to work, were killed in the accident.

Another pedestrian is in a critical condition in hospital. Early mornings, scores of people from Kanana can be seen walking or cycling to their places of employment in Klerksdorp and surrounding areas on the pedestrian walkways next to the R30.
