Lentswe, Alabama - The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, through the Office of the Executive Mayor donated hockey equipment to Alabama Primary School.
Ward Councillor Farouk Tagaree who officially handed over the equipment to the school on behalf of the District Executive Mayor Nikiwe Num, said the challenge of delivering sports development in South Africa’s townships persists.
“The fact that physical education and sport are on a gradual decline within the school curriculum, public schools have probably reduced the exposure of young people to sport.
In order to reduce the contributing factor to the high abuse of drugs and alcohol by youth in our townships, there is a need to re-engage extra-mural activities in schools to lessen the impact of addiction. There is no better way than starting them young as they are encouraged to develop a strong competitive educational and physical base whilst at learning foundation phase in primary schools,’’ he said.
When receiving the equipment on behalf of the school, school principal Shain Hofmeyer said everyone at the shool were delighted to receive the gift.
“We are very thankful for the donation from the District Executive Mayor’s Office. The school only started participating in hockey in early 2023 and I can tell there are players that have displayed tremendous talent.’’
