Lentswe, Orkney - The executives of the N12 Ultra Marathon NPC devised a visionary plan to establish a locally based athletics and recreational club. This initiative was aimed not only to recruit talent from the townships but also to promote healthy living and professional athletics as a lifestyle among young people.

From this ambitious vision emerged the Orkney Marathon Club, with members hailing from Kanana, Orkney, Jouberton, Klerksdorp, and Khuma. The club’s membership, representing a cross-section of demographics, predominantly consists of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds residing in the townships.

Since its inception, the Orkney Marathon Club has played a pivotal role as the primary host of the renowned North West Province N12 Ultra Marathon. Members have been actively engaged in the organizing committee since the inaugural 2022 race events. Notably, several developing members showcased their prowess on the race routes, with two members claiming podium finishes in the 50km and 10km junior categories during the 2023 edition of the event.

On Thursday May 9, the club unveiled their meticulously designed and tailored club regalia at the Kanana Sports Ground during their routine weekly training session. The event saw the participation of members of the N12 Ultra Executive and the marathon event’s organizing committee.
