STELLALANDER-SCHWEIZER-RENEKE: The 45-year-old Sergeant Thomas Moleme was granted R7000 bail upon his first appearance in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 31 August for corruption.
Moleme was expected to reappear before court on Wednesday, 27 September. Information is that the member, who was accompanied by a person whom he introduced as a Captain, arrested a suspect for assault in May this year. On their way to the police station, the pair demanded R1000 on behalf of the assault victim on condition that the latter withdraws the case. The suspect consented to the demand and gave R1000 to the duo.

The sergeant and his companion further demanded R1000 each from the suspect. As a result, they were given R2 470.00 upon which they released the suspect. However, Moleme apparently kept on harassing and demanding money from the suspect. Subsequent to reporting of the matter to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit (ACIU), the member was arrested in Schweizer-Reneke on Tuesday, 29 August during an undercover operation by the ACIU and Anti-Gang Unit. A 59-year-old Captain Kagiso Peace Maiketso, stationed at Schweizer-Reneke was granted R7000 bail upon appearance before the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 27 September after being arrested for corruption as an additional suspect in the case alluded to above. That was after investigations revealed that he is the person who was in the company of Sergeant Thomas Moleme when they allegedly demanded R1000 from a suspect. Both will appear before the court on Wednesday, 25 October. Sergeant Moleme will also be facing an additional charge of corruption after it transpired that he also took R4500 in January 2021, from a suspect on behalf of the complainant on condition that the latter withdraws the case. However, that did not occur.
