STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Law enforcement agencies in the North West province, in collaboration with other stakeholders, achieved a significant breakthrough during Operation Shanela, arresting 1 194 suspects for various offenses between Monday, 6 January, and Sunday, 12 January 2025.
The operation targeted crimes ranging from illicit mining, murder, rape, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to drug dealing, illegal liquor trade, burglaries, and driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 115 suspected undocumented individuals were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. Among the notable arrests were: A 36-year-old Angolan national apprehended in Vryburg for possession of crystal meth and a 35-year-old Nigerian national detained for possession of crystal meth and 91 mandrax tablets. In Lomanyaneng, a roadblock operation led to the shutdown of an illegal second-hand goods dealership operating without a valid registration certificate. The dealer was issued a fine following inspections. The week-long operation saw the search of 307 premises, 3,888 persons, and 1 197 vehicles. Compliance inspections were conducted at 250 liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealerships, resulting in the confiscation of: Liquor, 55 rounds of ammunition, five firearms, jewelry, nine cell phones and various drugs and other items. The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, praised the dedication of police officers and other law enforcement personnel. “Your persistent hard work has ensured the safety and security of our communities,” he said. Operation Shanela’s success underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between police and other role players in combating crime and enhancing public safety.
