STELLALANDER-AMALIA: Goitse Modimo (42), Samuel Sarel (55), and Bohelo Tlhalefo Kai (38) appeared before the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 11 April 2025, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen sheep.
The trio was remanded in custody and will appear again in court on Thursday, 17 April 2025.
The charges stem from an incident reported in the early hours of Wednesday, 9 April, around 04:00 in Amalia. Police on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle with six occupants and stopped it. Upon approaching the vehicle, three men fled, but they were quickly apprehended. During a search of the Toyota bakkie, police discovered 14 sheep. The suspects could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the sheep and were immediately arrested. The bakkie and the suspected stolen sheep were confiscated by police. Later, the properly marked sheep were returned to their rightful owner in Madibogo, who had not been aware that his livestock had been stolen. The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, praised the police officers for their vigilance and dedication in ensuring that criminals are brought to justice. He also emphasized the importance of proper livestock marking in aiding successful criminal investigations. He urged livestock owners to employ herders or shepherds, particularly when their animals are grazing, and recommended keeping dogs close to kraals at night to alert owners of potential intruders.
