BONUS - BOITEKONG - Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated annually in honour of Nelson Mandela on 18 July - Madiba’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.
This year, the Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 in partnership with the North West provincial Human Resource Management office, Women’s Network, Men For Change, Employee Health and Wellness, and the Boitekong Community Police Forum, decided to follow up on a project that was started by Head Office in 2017, during the police national Excellence Awards held at Sun City.

The then beneficiary was an elderly woman (now deceased). At that time, she was staying in a shanty house with her family, including her grandchildren. The family’s need was identified by the local police after their house had burnt down. It was during this time that the police engaged with local mining companies to assist in building the family a new house.
On 18 July, in commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, the South African Police Service visited the Kolobe family and assisted by cleaning the yard, replacing broken windowpanes and painting their house. The family is currently led by a 44-year-old father with five children, aged between ten and 25.
