Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - A man who claimed to be a car salesman and who pocketed just under R1 million, was sent to jail for 12 years.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomes the conviction and sentencing of Joseph Mputi (59) by the Stilfontein Special Commercial Crimes Court for fraud. He was sentenced on January 30 and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The case follows an incident in November 2018 when Mputi introduced himself as a salesman for a car dealership in Stilfontein.

“He offered to assist a prospective buyer to get a discount on a vehicle he wanted to purchase. The complainant deposited R950 000 into Mputi’s bank account in order to transfer it to the business account. However, the victim did not receive the vehicle. Upon approaching the motor dealership, he was informed that the accused was not employed by the company,” said Capt Aafje Botma, police spokesperson.

The case was reported and Mputi was eventually traced through documents he gave to the victim.
