Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - Three dilapidated buildings were demolished in Orkney last week. This happened after the Matlosana Municipality received three court orders granted by the High Court in Mahikeng to go ahead with the demolition of the buildings. Two abandoned buildings in Pope Avenue and one in Bennet Street were broken down.
Cllr Mojalefa Mosupa, MMC for Planning and Human Settlements in the City of Matlosana, told Klerksdorp Record that these buildings were hiding places for criminals and vagrants and an eye sore for the community.
He was accompanied by MMC Public Safety Cllr Tshepo Khoza, MMC Electrical Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, as well as employees from the Directorates of Infrastructure and Planning & Human Settlements.
In terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act dilapidated buildings are all buildings:
- a) That appears to have been abandoned by the owner with or without the consequence that rates or other service charges are not paid;
- b) That is derelict in appearance, overcrowded or is showing signs of being unhealthy, unsanitary, unsightly or objectionable;
- c) That we normally get complaints in respect of criminal activities, including drug dealings and prostitution;
- d) That is illegally occupied;
- e) Where refuse material is accumulated, dumped, stored or deposited with the exception of license waste disposal facilities; or
- f) That is partially completed or structurally unstable and is a threat or danger to the safety of the general public.
According to the MMC, the municipality is awaiting more court orders for further demolitions in Elandsheuwel, Oudorp, Pienaarsdorp and other areas around Klerksdorp.
