Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Operation Shanela in the province continues to ensure that serious and violent crime suspects are arrested through execution of various actions. The police had their hands full as they arrested 892 suspects during operations in various parts of the province between February 24 and March 2.
“Amongst others, a total of 68 people were put behind bars for driving under the influence of liquor and drugs, 150 for possession of drugs, 12 for dealing in drugs and 21 for illegal dealing in liquor, 14 arrests were made for burglary at residential premises, 12 for burglary at business premises, 23 for malicious damage to property and 129 for assault and a total of 88 illegal migrants were apprehended and processed by the Department of Home Affairs,” said Col Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson.
She added that 124 licensed liquor premises, 56 second-hand dealers and 28 informal businesses were inspected and four farms were visited to ensure labour law compliance, coordinating with the Department of Home Affairs and Department of Labour. “Police also confiscated 30 cellular phones, a variety of drugs, tobacco products, more than 800 litres of alcohol, 26 rounds of ammunition, 150 kg of copper cables, two vehicles and two firearms.”
The Acting NW Provincial Commissioner, Maj-Genl Patrick Asaneng, reiterated that the police will continue to decisively deal with criminality.
