Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Preparatory examinations for Grade 12 learners in the province commenced successfully on Monday August 19 despite challenges encountered at a few schools.

The first day of examinations included Information Technology and Setswana which a few schools including St Mary’s Secondary School in Mahikeng encountered a hiccup where learners were temporarily prevented from entering the premises due to a misunderstanding between the Department and the school. The Department swiftly intervened to resolve the matter.

Consultative talks between relevant stakeholders were initiated and concluded before the start of the afternoon examination session, ensuring minimal disruption to the examination timetable.

In addition, six schools in Ikageng, near Potchefstroom, were affected by community unrest that prevented learners from writing their first examination on Monday. The Department worked out alternative arrangements to ensure that the affected learners have the opportunity to write their exams.

MEC for Education in the North West, Viola Motsumi, strongly condemns the disruption of this crucial examination period.

“I take this time to wish all our candidates the very best during this time and urge them to remain focused and diligent in their studies. I strongly condemn the deliberate act of disrupting our schools. There can be no justification for denying their right to education, no matter the severity of the issues.

“I also commend all stakeholders involved at St Mary’s School in Mahikeng for their cooperation and commitment to ensuring that our candidates were able to write their papers without hindrance.’’

The North West province has registered a total of 41 268 full-time candidates and 1 709 part-time candidates, registered across 443 examination centres,  a turnout slightly lower than that of the 2023 academic year with a decrease of 3 108 candidates.
The examinations will be concluded by September 18.
