Lentswe, Potchefstroom - Six of the nine suspects arrested during community protest that took place in Ikageng Township on Monday August 19 are still in custody after appearing in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court. The other three accused who are juveniles, were released by the court on Tuesday August 20.

The case against Petrus Mokheledi (36), Phehello Mphasa (26), Xolani Mthule (25), Isack wilson (21),  Itumeleng Tatai (23) and Lybow Mmbwammalo (36) will resume on Friday September 6 when they will probably apply for bail. All accused were arrested at an informal settlement near Extension 11, Ikageng Township for alleged looting. 

According to Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, the situation has been calm since Tuesday after the protest was apparently suspended. 

Meanwhle, police are still making a plea to parents and community leaders to guard against the danger of allowing children to take part in community protests. 

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed the arrests and reiterated that lawlessness will not be tolerated and that criminals who disguise as protestors during community protests, will not be spared.
