Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The investigation into the murder of police sergeant Fundiswa Motlhaoleng has taken a macabre turn with the death of her husband. Gaolekwe Daniel Motlhaoleng died on Sunday April 6. It is alleged that he drank poison soon after his wife’s murder. He has been hospitalised ever since. Sgt Motlhaoleng was gunned down on the afternoon of January 14 while traveling to work. She was in her vehicle when she was shot at close range. Her car was parked next to the road in Tjaart Kruger Street in Randlespark as if she stopped for someone.
A black VW Polo was seen speeding for the scene. The vehicle’s description matched that of her husband.
Danny (46) worked as an admin clerk for SAPS in Klerksdorp. He was not at the office at the time of his wife’s death. The couple has three children.
Earlier, the Hawks investigating the murder did not want to comment on rumours that he was the shooter. This week Klerksdorp Record was told that he was a person of interest in the investigation of his wife’s death. “We are still waiting for forensic results for Sgt Motlhaoleng’s murder and can confirm that he was a person of interest on the murder case,’’ said Capt Amogelang Malwetse, Hawks spokesperson.
She confirmed that an inquest has been registered after the death of the husband. “We await the autopsy results which will confirm the cause of death in his case.’’ Malwetse also confirmed that investigation has shown no connection between the murders of Sgt Motlhaoleng and Const Mojalefa Mgwebi.
The investigation into the murder of Mgwegi is still ongoing. Both police officers worked on the same shift in Jouberton and were killed only months apart.
