Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The new NWU School of Medicine is not just a dream anymore. Prof Binu Luke, lead of the NWU Medical School Project, explained that phase one of the planning of the new school has been completed. He is very upbeat about the further progress of this project.

He talked to Lentswe on Wednesday April 9 sharing the good news. According to him the project has the support from the Ministries of the Departments of Health and Higher Education and Training as well as the Health Professions Council of SA.

The establishment of the medical school will mean investment in Klerksdorp. Two buildings will be constructed in the city.

“In all, three buildings will be completed. The first building will be the main building on the campus of the NWU in Potchefstroom. Building is set to commence in July and the school is set to open in 2028. Two buildings will be erected in Klerksdorp - one at Tshepong Hospital and one at or near Klerksdorp Hospital.”

Prof Luke added that the study course will be over six years - the first three years at the NWU in Potchefstroom using the clinical training facilities in the JB Marks Municipality, year four and five at Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex and the final year across the province.

“This means that the academic buildings in Klerksdorp will only be needed by 2030,” he said.
The official naming ceremony of the NWU Medical School will be held on April 22 in Sandton.
