Lentswe, Mahikeng - The North West Department of Education (NWDoE) has announced the extension of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V contracts until December 31. This extension, which replaces the previous November 30 termination date, means that Education Assistants and General Assistants will now work a full six-month term, bringing the province in line with other parts of the country.

The approval for the extension was granted by the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) following a request submitted by the NWDoE in August.

The NWDoE confirmed that the extension:
- Ensures the North West Province receives the full six-month implementation period as originally planned.
- Does not result in any additional financial implications beyond the already approved BEEI Phase V budget.
- Remains within the duration and parameters of the Multipart Funding Agreement (MFA).

MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, welcomed the news, highlighting the benefit to local families. “This news will provide significant financial relief to the families of our youth, especially during the festive season.

“Their contribution to our schools is immeasurable and benefits both educators and learners,” said MEC Motsumi.

The BEEI programme, which began in 2020, continues to be a key initiative for job creation, offering young people significant employment opportunities and providing crucial support to schools and learners across the province.
