South Africa’s largest wheeling project was officially commissioned on Tuesday, 16 July at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Lichtenburg in the North West province. Wheeling allows a business to buy clean, private power (delivering energy from a generator to an end-user located in another area through the use of an existing distribution or transtition network - such as Eskom). The project, in which The SOLA Group will provide Tronox Mineral Sands with more than 200MW of clean renewable energy, will also see an injectiion of more than R200m in the local economy with hundreds of permanent and part-time job opportunities.

SOLA’s work in Lichtenburg has created value in the local North West community by providing 789 temporary jobs for residents, creating employment for a further 147 workers via SMMEs on the project, bringing 700 contractors on site and providing education opportunities to 305 people. Construction work started in September 2023 and the provincial economy is drawing enormous benefit from solar projects planned for the province. (Photo: SOLA TRONOX)
