BRITS POS – MARIKANA – On Monday, 19 August around 18:00 an armed Cash-in-Transit robbery took place along the N4 Bakwena Highway near Marikana, west of Brits.
Residents could hear volleys of shots being fired.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for SAPS Hawks North West, two security officers were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash. According to information, the officers were driving to Rustenburg on the N4 road near the Marikana off-ramp when a black Mercedes Benz hit the cash in transit truck from the back and forced it off the road.

The suspects allegedly shot in the direction of security officers, then bombed the truck and took an undisclosed amount of cash. As the suspects fled from the scene, they came across a marked police vehicle and shot at it, but no one was injured.  The suspects also exchanged fire with members of another security company. They reached a dead end as they drove towards the K4 mine, then drove back and shot at the security officers.
A rifle with obliterated serial number as well as .22 ammunition were found at the scene. No arrest has yet been effected and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) is investigating. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a case of Cash-in-Transit robbery and attempted murder. We appeal to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to anonymously report it by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send a tip-off on the MySAPS App which can be downloaded on any smartphone.”
