BRITS POS - BRITS - “The time is now for the citizens of South Africa to keep those that they have voted for, accountable for good, clean, corrupt free and effective governance”, the chairman of the North West Chamber of Commerce and Industry NWCoCI), Benedict Modise, said last week.
“We believe that the political parties will realise that things cannot go on like it has been for the past number of years where we have seen the steady collapse of local government and service delivery.
The citizens have spoken, and they are demanding to be treated with the respect that they deserve.
There are too many elected people that do not understand that the people pay their salaries and they are expected to do the work for it,” he said.
Modise also said that we have a lot of work to do if we want the country to get back on track of growth and prosperity.
“We need good and able leadership and workable budgets. Budgets that show clear maintenance and building programmes and not only salary expenses.
These budgets must also show income through good administration. We need responsible leaders that know that they have to pay for water and electricity,” he said.
The CEO of the Chamber, André Coertzen, said that he would like to see the municipalities do most of the work themselves.
“They are not there to make contractors rich by putting everything out on tender. Government at all levels are being overcharged for the most basic things. I sometimes wonder why we have employees in municipalities if they cannot do the most basic repair and maintenance work. The tender system is killing this country and making a few people rich,” he said.
Coertzen concluded by saying that the people should keep elected leaders accountable.
“The time is now for the people to demand good, corruption free services.”
