RUSTENBURG HERALD - MARIKANA - The South African Police Service in Marikana has launched an investigation following a fatal stabbing incident that occurred during the early hours of Sunday, 5 October, at a tavern in Skierlek, Marikana. According to information received from Sgt Ofentse Mokgadi, police spokesperson in Rustenburg, the 24-year-old victim was in the company of his friend when an argument broke out with a known 19-year-old male suspect over a pool game.
It is alleged that after a brief confrontation inside the tavern, the suspect left the premises, returned with a knife, and later confronted the victim outside as the tavern was closing.
A heated argument ensued, during which the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim several times in the chest before fleeing to his home. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was certified dead by emergency personnel.
Members of the community reportedly tracked down the suspect and assaulted him. Police officers from the Community Service Centre (CSC) responded swiftly and rescued the suspect, who was then transported to a nearby hospital under police guard.
A knife believed to have been used during the incident was recovered at the suspect’s home and booked as evidence.
On Monday, 6 October, the suspect was formally charged with murder before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court in absentia, as he remains in hospital under police guard.
Investigations into the matter continue.
