RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The police in Rustenburg have launched a manhunt following the brutal killing of an elderly couple in the parking lot of a shopping centre on Saturday afternoon, 14 June.
According to Provincial Police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh, preliminary reports suggest that the couple was fatally shot after a confrontation ensued with the occupants of a white Kia Rio without number plates.
Paramedics declared both victims dead on the scene. The motive of the incident is yet to be determined. The police urge anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigations to contact Lt Col Mainganyo Nathaniël Phatsoane on 082 373 9571 or Lt Col Patrick Murunwa on 082 772 5991.
According to those that were near the scene, gunshots were heard coming from the parking lot. Upon closer inspection, they discovered two people, one male and one female, lying next to their vehicle.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Maj Gen Patrick Asaneng said: "This senseless, gratuitous violence which has led to the brutal slaying of the elderly couple in broad daylight cannot and should not go unpunished. I am calling upon the perpetrator(s) to listen to their conscience and hand themselves over immediately to the police before they are tracked.
By our time of going to press, it was confirmed by the SAPS that two of the three suspects were arrested in Rustenburg Oos-Einde and Boitekong township. The vehicle (a white Kia Rio) and the firearm, believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, were also recovered. The suspects are 41 and 29-years-old respectively.
The duo will appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 June, facing a charge of double murder.
