Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter has confirmed a devastating outbreak of Canine Distemper within its facility, leading to its immediate closure to the public.
Following veterinary assessment, and three more dogs exhibiting symptoms, the shelter declared a full quarantine to protect animals at the shelter and the wider community’s pets.
This critical measure means the shelter is currently unable to accept adoptions, dog visits, or animal drop-offs until further notice. The closure poses a significant challenge for the community, particularly for stray animals in need of care and pet owners who rely on the shelter’s services. With the facility under quarantine, options for rescuing or surrendering animals are severely limited, which could impact animal welfare in the Klerksdorp and Orkney areas during this period.
Canine Distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal disease among dogs, though it poses no risk to humans. “We urge the public to please not bring any dogs to the shelter,” the shelter announced on their social media platforms, emphasizing the need to prevent further spread and protect vulnerable animals.
Urgent Call for Disinfectant Supplies: To combat the outbreak, the shelter is undergoing an intensive disinfection regimen. Staff are utilizing approximately 25 litres of disinfectant every 3-4 days to sanitize kennels, equipment, and walkways, ensuring the safety of remaining animals and staff.
The shelter is appealing to the community for urgent donations of essential cleaning supplies, including: Germicidal disinfectant, bleach/Jik, black dip/Jeyes Fluid. The shelter has confirmed it will arrange collection for any donations, highlighting that “any contribution, big or small, will significantly help us protect our animals and halt the spread of this illness.”
The Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter will provide updates as soon as it is safe to reopen its services.
