Zama-zamas dying of hunger
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Thousands of illegal mineworkers are still stuck underground near Stilfontein, apparently too weak from hunger to resurface.
A large contingent of police officers gathered this week near Khuma where some residents expressed their concern about the welfare of the men trapped underground. Some of these residents are willing to go voluntarily to the zama-zamas. Reporters from Newzroom Afrika spoke to Phatela Phoko on Tuesday November 12 who went underground in the disused Stilfontein mine. He claims he spotted bodies of six illegal miners down there, and that many surviving illegal miners are in bad health.Read more: Zama-zamas dying of hunger -
Read more: Plaaslike kroeë staan saam teen bakleiery -
Parking area damaged
A burst water pipe at the corner of Ian and Scott Street, directly in front of the Klerksdorp Record’s building forced thousands of litres of water to flood the surrounding area. Massive damage was caused on Saturday November 9 in the parking area at Klerksdorp Record and is for the time being closed for motorists because the area is unstable. Ongoing rain during the week is also causing a delay in the repair work. Matlosana’s water department arrived on site to fix the burst pipe that same afternoon.
