Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp – A Jouberton family is getting ready to bury the 8-year-old Omphemetse Khalapa who fell ill after eating chips bought from a neighbour in Ext 23. According to her older sister, Boitshoko, the child and two of her cousins fell ill after eating the snacks they bought from the friendly neighbour who sell snacks, biscuits and cigarettes from her home. “Five of them went to buy the chips on Friday afternoon, and on Saturday morning three of them were sick. They were vomiting and had diarrhea.’’

She said while the other two children started to get better, her sister turned for the worse and on Sunday, their mother rushed her to the hospital. But it was too late, Omphemetse died.

Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, confirmed that the police are investigating the child’s death. “At this stage, the exact cause of her passing remains unclear. Forensic tests are being done to determine the cause of her death.’’

The family is in shock after the death of the little girl who just finished gr 2. “We spoke to the lady who sells the snacks and she is also shocked. We don’t understand how some get sick, while others don’t get sick. Even if they eat from the same bag of chips.’’

Her funeral will be held on Friday December 13 at home.
